Previous choral scholars

For many choral scholars, the choir becomes a valuable social network during their time in London - and even a 'family away from home.' In return, we like to keep in touch with our previous scholars as they move on to new challenges, musical and otherwise.

Emily-Jane Thomas, soprano, 2004-05 and 2006-07

Emily-Jane Thomas was born and bred in Cardiff. In 2003, she began her degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, which she completed in 2007. Her musical interests are wide-ranging, from choral singing to opera. She played the role of Paquette in Welsh National Youth Opera's 2006 production of Bernstein's Candide.

Emily served as an All Saints Scholar in two different years. In between, in 2005-06, Emily spent six months on an Erasmus exchange in Hamburg. She is now pursuing a career in light opera and musical theatre.

Laia Cortes Calafell, alto, 2006-07

Laia started to learn music at the age of four. In 1996 she obtained the foundation degree in music from the municipal conservatoire of Barcelona, during which time she sang in youth and semi-professional choirs and performed around Europe.

As a soloist, she has performed Magnificat by Vivaldi, Stabat mater by Pergolesi and Christmas oratorio by Saint-Saens. In the operatic repertoire she has sungthe roles of Fidalma from Il Matrimonio Segreto by Cimarosa and Sesto from La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart. In December 2003 she started her studies at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Toby Scholz , tenor, 2006-07

Toby started singing in the Youth Choir of the Peter-Cornelius-Konservatorium in Mainz, Germany, at the age of 11. As a young man, he took up courses in piano, harmony, composition and rhythm and was invited to join the presigious Mainzer Figuralchor and several other ensembles.

One of the highlights of Toby's early career was an appearance with the Hilliard Ensemble in Neuwied in 2002. He completed his undergraduate course at Guildhall in 2007 and continues to appear in song recitals in the UK and Austria.

Dhilan Gnanadurai, baritone, 2003-07

All Saints had the good fortune to enjoy Dhilan's beautiful baritone voice in the choral scholar role for four years. Born in Sri Lanka, Dhilan gained his Associate of the Trinity College of Music (London) in singing, piano and violin by the age of 17.

Dhilan completed his BMus (Hons) degree at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2007. In 2004, he was chosen to represent GSMD and was a national finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Young Singers Bursary Award. He won the Oratorio and Lieder prizes and the prize for outstanding male singer in the 2006 North London Music festival.

As a recitalist, Dhilan's repertoire ranges from Bach to Barber and he has recently begun to pursue an operatic career with roles such as Masetto in Don Giovanni for Hampstead Garden Opera.
